New Zealand now has nearly 800 electric vehicles registered on NZ roads – more than double from this time last year: Starting out as pure linear growth in 2013 and early 2014, EV registrations in New Zealand are now getting closer to exponential in numbers, and this bodes very well for a visibly accelerated uptake across the country.

The technology continues to improve. For example, the 2016 Nissan Leaf will have a 27% longer range than the previous version. New models continue to come onto the market. We are seeing some of these in New Zealand, but overseas all the major car companies now offer EV, either plug in hybrids or pure electrics. At the Drive Electric AGM we heard from two major European car companies that the future was electric. These car companies indicated that within 2-3 years all drivetrains will be electric. We are also seeing government demonstrate a genuine desire to engage and support.
