RECOMMENDATION: Enhancing Safety Standards for E-Mobility Lithium-ion Batteries

Drive Electric has sent an urgent recommendation to the Honourable Minister Scott Simpson, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, about the safety of lithium-ion batteries currently entering the New Zealand market.

The letter raises serious concerns about the fire risk posed by poor-quality lithium-ion batteries in imported e-bikes and e-scooters. Without stronger safeguards, Aotearoa risks becoming a dumping ground for unsafe products that are already being restricted in Australia.

To address this, Drive Electric has provided a formal recommendation for a new regulatory framework to lift safety standards and better protect people, homes and communities.

We would welcome the opportunity to meet with the Minister and his office to discuss how Drive Electric can support the Government to put these protections in place.
