Formed in 2023 to tackle the barriers to investment in public charging, the CPO Subgroup is currently engaging the Government on its objective to achieve 10,000 chargers by 2030.
The work focusses on network connections (processes, visibility and costs) and government investment.

The CPO subgroup has met the new government taskforce responsible for the Supercharging EV infrastructure work programme for the first time. Subgroup members are exploring future funding models. It’s likely there’ll be another funding round or two this year through EECA, and this could trial any changes to an approach used longer term.
The subgroup is engaged in the Electricity Authority’s (EA) work programmes focused on network connection processes and pricing, and with Electricity Networks Aotearoa’s Future Networks Forum on streamlining connections. The intent is to contribute to developing a system that enables network connections to support roll out of EV charging at pace and scale.
In May EA announced it’s milestone intention to develop a code on connection pricing and it will form a technical group to support that work.
Policies to drive EV uptake
We continue to monitor EV uptake and have conversations with the Government and in the public domain about the importance of electrification to meet Aotearoa New Zealand’s economic and environmental ambitions.
To prepare for second emissions reduction plan (ERP2) consultations in late 2024, we invited our members to complete our short survey last month.
We are pleased to report a record response rate and wish to thank all of the participants for their valuable input. We will soon circulate a draft letter to the minister, for your input, so it can contain your suggestions to support vehicle uptake and investment in private charging.
