Powerco

New Plymouth

Powerco is New Zealand’s second-largest electricity and gas distribution utility company with around 1.1m customers connected to their networks. These networks extend across the North Island, serving urban and rural homes, businesses, and major industrial and commercial sites. Powerco aims to support distributed and renewable generation of energy by enabling their customers’ use of solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles.

As geographically the largest electricity distribution business in New Zealand, Powerco has been pivotal in increasing the number of chargers across its network area. In conjunction with ChargeNet NZ, charging stations have been installed across Bay of Plenty, Coromandel, Wairarapa, Manawatu, Taranaki and Whanganui.

Powerco is preparing their networks for emerging technologies and low carbon alternatives, and reducing their own emissions by improving ways of working. Leading by example, in 2016 Powerco joined other high-profile businesses in committing to convert 30% of its fleet to electric. They are well on the way to achieving this, with 26% of their fleet transitioned to electric so far.
